Which web design agency is the best fit for you?
If you are looking for an agency to build your website, you face a paradox in Switzerland: on the one hand there are thousands of providers (from solo web designers to large web agencies), on the other the spread in quality is enormous. If you want a professional website that works on every device with responsive design, loads fast and gets found in Google rankings, you need the right digital partner. A business website costs between CHF 5'000 and CHF 250'000 depending on ambition, driven by factors such as CMS choice (WordPress, Webflow, Drupal, headless), custom functionality, multilingual scope (DE/FR/IT/EN), integration requirements (CRM, shop, booking) and design ambition.
This hub page brings together the strongest web design agencies from ten German-speaking Swiss cities. Each city has its own strengths: Zurich for premium and corporate webs, Basel for pharma-compliant websites, Lucerne for hotels and tourism, Zug for crypto/Web3, Biel for bilingual DE/FR, the Mittelland for pragmatic SME solutions. Only providers with web design as a core discipline are listed. This lets you find and compare the right web agency for your project, from start-up to established SME, from a simple WordPress website through online shops, webshops and e-commerce to complex web development with bespoke digital solutions.
The platform currently lists German-speaking Swiss providers (Romandie and Ticino are on the roadmap). mmesh.ai is neutral, free of charge and commission-free.

The German-speaking Swiss web design market comprises over 800 specialised providers plus many solo web designers. Geographically it is concentrated in Zurich (35-40 per cent), Bern (10 per cent) and Basel (10 per cent), with the rest spread across Lucerne, Zug, St. Gallen, Winterthur and the Mittelland.
Structurally, four categories dominate: WordPress-focused boutique agencies (the SME market), Webflow specialists (design-focused marketing sites), custom development houses with Next.js/React plus headless CMS (corporate and enterprise mandates), and e-commerce specialists (Shopify, WooCommerce, custom shops). Drupal specialists dominate the public sector market.
For SMEs, WordPress or Webflow boutiques are usually the right choice. Custom development only pays off from complex requirements onwards (multiple frontends, high performance, bespoke backend integration). Drupal only where the focus is public sector or multilingual scope.
Six typical web sub-disciplines.
Sitemap, user journey, wireframes, UX research. CHF 3'000-15'000 project-based.
Visual design, mockups, design system, component library. CHF 5'000-30'000.
HTML/CSS/JS or framework-based (Next.js, Nuxt). CHF 8'000-80'000.
WordPress, Webflow, Drupal, headless. CHF 3'000-30'000 depending on CMS complexity.
Shopify, WooCommerce, custom shop. CHF 10'000-100'000.
Updates, backups, security, performance optimisation. CHF 200-1'500 per month as a retainer.
Web design fees in Switzerland vary enormously with ambition. A WordPress website on a standard template basis with moderate customisation costs CHF 5'000-15'000. Custom design with WordPress or Webflow CHF 15'000-50'000. Complex custom frontends with Next.js/React and a headless CMS CHF 50'000-200'000+. E-commerce with Shopify Plus or a custom shop CHF 20'000-150'000.
Hourly rates range regionally from CHF 110 to 280, with Zurich and Zug at the top end and the Mittelland 15-20 per cent below. Production costs (photography, video, copy) often come on top, typically CHF 3'000-25'000 depending on scope.
What you should avoid as an SME: giving an SME mandate to a corporate web agency. The overhead structures do not fit. For SME websites under CHF 25'000, a boutique or an experienced solo team is almost always the better choice.
Three tiers. Hourly rates regionally CHF 110-280.
Template-based with individual customisation. For local service providers and smaller businesses. Boutique or freelancer.
Bespoke visual design, WordPress or Webflow, multiple templates, optionally multilingual. Established boutique agency.
Custom frontend with Next.js/React, headless CMS, complex integrations, performance-optimised. Specialist.
First question: CMS strategy. WordPress (the SME standard, broad plugin ecosystem), Webflow (a design tool with a CMS, good for marketing sites), Drupal (public sector, multilingual), headless (Sanity, Contentful for complex setups). The CMS choice shapes which agencies fit, because specialisation varies by CMS.
Second question: website only, or integrated with other systems? If you need CRM, shop, booking or member area integration, you need an agency with backend capability. Pure design agencies without their own developers often face a learning curve here.
Third question: production mandate or ongoing partnership? A one-off website project (concept, design, build, launch) is classically project-based. A maintenance retainer with ongoing upkeep, performance optimisation and content updates is a different contract logic. Each has its own cost structure.
Points 1, 2 and 4 are decisive for most mandates.
Six typical constellations.
Plumbers, hairdressers, practices, fiduciaries. WordPress standard, local-SEO-optimised. CHF 5'000-12'000.
Law firms, consulting. Custom design on WordPress or Webflow, thought leadership content. CHF 15'000-40'000.
Swiss online shops. Shopify or WooCommerce, conversion-optimised, FinIA/ZAG-compliant. CHF 20'000-80'000.
Hotels, mountain railways. Booking integration, multilingual scope, imagery-led. CHF 15'000-60'000.
Software companies. Custom frontend with Next.js, conversion-focused. CHF 25'000-100'000.
Federal offices, cantons. Drupal, eCH-0059, multilingual DE/FR/IT, accessibility. CHF 50'000-300'000.
